Heroes For Sale Game - 20/2/10

Im going to be playing a 50pt game with Toby at Heroes for Sale in couple of weeks, not this saturday but the one after.

Should be good fun, if you live in Palmy come and have a look :)

Ill be taking my good old eSorcha Winterguard list - and just to give Toby a heads-up this is what ill be running:

Forward Kommander Sorscha
^Beast-09
^War dog
Battle Mechaniks (Leader and 3 Grunts)
Great Bears of Gallowswood
Greylord Ternion (Leader and 2 Grunts)
Greylord Ternion (Leader and 2 Grunts)
Widowmakers (Leader and 3 Grunts)
Winter Guard Infantry (Leader and 9 Grunts)
3 Winter Guard Infantry Rocketeers
Winter Guard Infantry Officer & Standard
Winter Guard Mortar Crew (Leader and Grunt)
Winter Guard Mortar Crew (Leader and Grunt)
Harlan Versh
Kovnik Jozef Grigorovich
Manhunter
Manhunter

This is basically an expansion of my other 35pt list, with the "Winterguard Deathstar" as its now being called, backed up by some heavy support - namely Mortars and Greylords. The Greatbears and Manhunters flank, while the Widowmakers and Harlan Versh skirmish in front in order to pick off incoming forces.

Ill probably be playing vs Khador, so Beast 09 and eSorchas feat are what I will use as an answer to heavy armour. At the end of the day, my Winterguard will be hard to kill, and will advance as close to the enemy Warcaster as possible to finish the game.

  1. Well fuck.

This doesn't look great for me. I'll also have to fork out some cash, because I've only got 50 points of Khador total excluding casters.

It took one ship to destroy the death-star.

  2. Binz, can I get your opinion on my casual 35 pt E-Sorscha list?

    E-Sorscha +6
    Beast 09 - 11
    Winterguard Full - 6
    3 Rocketeers - 3
WG Officer and Standard - 2
    Kov Joe - 2
    Great Bears - 5
    Mortar - 3
    Mortar - 3
    Widdowmakers - 4
    Widdowmaker solo - 2
    Total: 41

Since it's for casual play, I didn't want to take any mercs like Bokur, Eiyrss, and A&H. I wanted to try Widdowmakers with Shatterstorm on them and the new Widdowmaker solo ability to give them more manueverability.

  3. Binz, can I give your comments on this 35 pt list?

    E-Sorscha +6
    Beast - 11
    Full WG + 3 Rockets + UA + Joe - 13
    Great Bears - 5
    2 Mortars - 6
    Widdowmakers - 4
    Widdowmaker Solo - 2
    Total: 41 pts

The list is pretty much for casual play. For that reason, I didn't want to take Mercs like Bokur, Eiryss, A&H, Versh, etc. I want to try putting Shatterstorm on my Widdowmakers and seeing how good at crowd control they become with the extra movement. What do you think?

  4. Hey :D

Youve got a nice list there.

The basics are solid - WG, UA, WA, Joe and Beast, and then the extra stuff is the Great Bears - always a good choice, mortars for support, and widowmakers + solo for skirmishing.

This is practically a list id run myself :)

For 35points its a great list. I dont think you need Mercs as most of the time they are utility, and dont help your overall army much.

Shatterstorm on Widows is oook.... ive used it a couple of times, not to a great effect. I save my focus nowadays. Still, the wording on Swift Hunter might change that --- ill just check.

awww it specifies "Normal ranged attack" so kills from Shatterstorm wouldnt effect it.

I was thinking for a second there, if you killed 3 models under the shatterstorm template the WM could move 6", but i think not.

  5. One of my concerns with the list though is against Menoth, my most common opponent. If he has up no shooting at jacks, then my WG aren't going to be able to CRA or take advantage of Sorscha's feat. I'm thinking I really need to get in Aiyanna and Holt. A&H with WG sort of ensure that the WG on feat turn are able to deliver their CRA goodness.

However, dropping my Mortars, Great Bears, or Widdowmakers is the only way to get them in.
Dropping Mortars means I'd have no bombards and have 2 left over pts which probably means a solo like Versh. Dropping Great Bears means I don't have any melee units other then Beast. Dropping Widdows and WM solo for A&H and Versh probably makes the most sense but is very Merc heavy and lowers my model count greatly.

The other interesting thought I had in my head was to run the same list as I created for E-Sorscha except sub in pIrusk. The advantage of that is I can take A&H and use those 2 pts to turn Beast into a Behemoth for lots of ranged goodness.

    pIrusk +6
    Behemoth - 13
    Full WG + 3 Rockets + UA + Joe - 13
    Aiyanna and Holt - 4
    Great Bears - 5
    Widdowmakers - 4
    Widdowmaker Solo - 2
    Total 41 pts

With pIrusk, the Behemoth gets Superiority and keeps the battle at a distance until the WG are up close. The thing I don't like about pIrusk's feat is that it's hard to time to your advantage. Do you think this list could be as competitive as E-Sorscha one of similar construct?

  6. Well, thats always going to be a problem vs Menoth - thats one of their greatest strengths. Personally i think you should be able to win with your original list, you just have to take the buffs out at the source. Run your mortars first turn, then bomb the bejeezus out of the choir all the remaining turns. you WILL kill some of them, reducing their effectiveness. Then the WG can shoot at will.

Also, if they have enemy heavies, use your anti-heavies to take them out, rather than your all-rounder unit. You have Beast and the GB's, between those two, if you can get the alpha strike (which you should with their threat range vs Menoth) they can take out two enemy heavies with no problems. Especially if you use eSorchas feat. If you take out two heavies at 35 pts, thats practically a third of their army, probably something they wont recover from.

IF they are smart, they will then countercharge your Beast + GBs, and then you need to use your WG to punish them. Hopefully they have no heavies left, and you will be able to annihilate the TFG or whatever countercharged you. Use double ups on CRA to get awesome accuracy, and POW14 on infantry is practically instant kill.

You need to dictate the fight according to the troops you have vs theirs - your anti-heavies vs their heavies, your anti-troops vs their troops, etc. If they have no army left, and you still have yours, eSorcha has done her job well.

Personally i dont think pIrusk runs WG as well as eSorcha, so id say no, its not as competitive, i would rather take MOW or IFP with pIrusk - as on the feat turn both these units are insane with him.

  7. One of the worst matchups against eSorcha is jack heavy. Because at a certain point, theres too many jacks left on the enemy side and youve run out of stuff to kill them.
